EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting watercolor painting, created by the skilled hand of Olivia Fanny Tonge in 1858, showcases two exquisite and delectable plants from the Malvaceae family: Sterculia and Eriobotrya japonica, commonly known as the Chinese almond and loquat, respectively. The Chinese almond tree, depicted in full bloom, boasts elegant pink and white blossoms that herald the arrival of spring. Its close relation, the almond tree (Amygdalus communis), is also a member of the Rosaceae family, but the Chinese almond is native to Southeast Asia and is not to be confused with the edible almond (Prunus dulcis) that is more commonly known. In the foreground, the loquat tree, or Japanese medlar (Eriobotrya japonica), is adorned with its golden-orange fruit, which is a favorite in East Asian cuisine. The loquat is an essential member of the Eudicot clade, specifically the Rosids, and is a valuable source of food for both humans and wildlife. Its fruit, which resembles a small peach, is not only delicious but also rich in vitamins and minerals. This beautiful watercolor is one of sixteen sketchbooks presented to the Natural History Museum in London in 1952. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the painting serve as a testament to Tonge's artistic skill and her deep appreciation for the natural world. The interconnectedness of these plants, as members of the Angiospermae, Magnoliophyta, and Eudicot classes, highlights the rich diversity of the plant kingdom and the importance of preserving and studying these precious specimens.
