In the other hand, he gestures towards a group of naked men, who are shown huddled together, seeking refuge from the scorching heat of the grid. The scene portrays an episode from the life of St. Laurence, who was a deacon in Rome during the reign of Emperor Valerian (253-260 AD). According to legend, when the emperor ordered the seizure of all the church's property, Laurence responded by presenting the emperor with a large group of the poor and needy, telling him that these were the true treasures of the Church. In retaliation, the emperor ordered Laurence to be roasted to death on a grid, an instrument used for cooking meat.
