Once upon a time, in a land of enchantment and wonder, the timeless tale of Sleeping Beauty unfolded. In this scene from the fairy tale, painted by the skilled hand of Felix de Gray in 1924, we find ourselves in the moment when the long-awaited Prince discovers the beautiful Aurora, asleep but looking remarkably perfect despite having been in a deep slumber for over a hundred years. The story of Sleeping Beauty, also known as Aurora in some versions, is a classic example of the European folktale genre. The tale begins with the curse of the wicked fairy Carabosse, who, enraged by not being invited to Aurora's christening, vows to prick the baby's finger and cause her to sleep for a hundred years. True to her word, Carabosse's curse comes to pass, and Aurora falls into a deep sleep. However, the tale does not end there. A prophecy foretells that only a true love's kiss can break the spell. And so, the Prince, upon hearing of the enchanted princess, sets out on a quest to find her and awaken her from her slumber.
