Sir Charles Russell, 1st Baronet, 1st Baron Russell of Killowen (1832-1900), was a prominent figure in British legal history as a lawyer and Lord Chief Justice. This photograph print depicts Russell in his later years, with a distinguished and wise expression that reflects his vast legal knowledge and experience. Born on February 22, 1832, in London, Russell was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1857. He quickly made a name for himself as a talented and skilled lawyer, and in 1873, he was appointed Solicitor General for England and Wales. In 1880, Russell was elevated to the bench as a Lord Justice of Appeal, and in 1885, he became Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, a position he held until his retirement in 1900. Russell's tenure as Lord Chief Justice was marked by his commitment to modernizing the legal system and improving access to justice for all. He oversaw the implementation of several important legal reforms, including the Matrimonial Causes Act of 1878, which made it easier for divorces to be granted, and the Criminal Evidence Act of 1898, which introduced important reforms to the rules of evidence. Despite his many accomplishments, Russell remained humble and dedicated to the pursuit of justice. He was known for his fairness, his keen intellect, and his ability to deliver clear and concise judgments.
