EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, titled "Royalist or Cavalier," is an exquisite illustration from the time of the Commonwealth in England (1659-1660), drawn by Charles Martin and etched by Leopold Martin. The father-son duo were renowned artists in their own right, following in the footsteps of their famous father, John Martin, a romantic artist and mezzotint engraver. The image showcases a Royalist or Cavalier, an ardent supporter of the monarchy during the English Civil War. The man wears a buff jacket, a popular choice among the Cavaliers, adorned with slashed sleeves, revealing the lining beneath. The jacket is paired with scarlet breeches, a color associated with the monarchy. The boots, reaching up to the knees, are adorned with buckles, while a pair of gloves completes the lower attire. The upper part of the outfit consists of a plumed hat, a symbol of rank and status, and a white shirt with a ruff collar. The man's attire is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the era, a stark contrast to the simpler styles of the Commonwealth period. The intricate details of the costume, from the folds of the fabric to the textures of the materials, are beautifully captured in the handcoloring. The illustration was drawn from various sources, including tapestries, monumental effigies, illuminated manuscripts, and portraits. The meticulous attention to detail and historical accuracy make this engraving an invaluable addition to any collection of 17th-century English costume and social history.
