EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken at the 94th Anniversary Luncheon held at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in London on 12 January 1960, we find three distinguished figures of the aeronautical world: Philip Wills, Constance Babington-Smith, and Philip Lucas. Philip Wills, the man on the left, was a renowned British aviation pioneer and test pilot. He began his career in the Royal Flying Corps during World War I and went on to set numerous aviation records throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Wills' daring exploits in the cockpit earned him the nickname "Phil the Thrill." Constance Babington-Smith, the elegant woman in the middle, was a pioneering British aviation journalist and editor. She was the first female aviation journalist and the first female editor of a British aviation magazine, "Flight." Babington-Smith played a significant role in promoting aviation and encouraging women to pursue careers in the industry. Philip Lucas, the man on the right, was a respected British aircraft designer and engineer. He began his career at the Royal Aircraft Establishment and went on to design several notable aircraft, including the de Havilland Comet, the world's first jet airliner. The trio's presence at the 94th Anniversary Luncheon underscores the importance of their contributions to the field of aviation. The photograph captures a moment of camaraderie and celebration, as these three pioneers reflect on their accomplishments and look forward to the future of flight. The planes, planes, and aeroplanes in the background serve as a reminder of the transport revolution that was underway, making this photograph a fascinating snapshot of a bygone era.
