EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration depicts the groundbreaking route taken by Roald Amundsen's Antarctic Expedition of 1910-1912, from their base at Framheim on the Ross Sea to the South Pole, achieved on December 14, 1911. Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, led the first team to reach the geographic South Pole, beating Robert Falcon Scott's British team by about a month. The illustration, dated 1912, showcases the arduous journey that Amundsen and his team endured. Starting from Framheim, located on the western side of the Ross Ice Shelf, the team traversed the Ross Ice Shelf, crossed the Transantarctic Mountains, and then headed towards the pole. The route is marked with a clear line, passing through the Beardmore Glacier and the polar plateau. Amundsen's team used a combination of dog teams, skis, and manhauling to cover the vast distances and overcome the challenging terrain. Their successful journey was a testament to their determination, preparation, and innovative use of technology, such as the use of skis and dogs in the extreme Antarctic conditions. The importance of Amundsen's achievement cannot be overstated, as it not only established Norway as a major polar power but also paved the way for further scientific exploration and understanding of the Antarctic continent. This illustration serves as a visual reminder of Amundsen's remarkable feat and the spirit of exploration that continues to inspire us today.
