EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment during the Rif War, a conflict between the colonial powers of Spain and France, and the Berber tribes of the Rif mountainous region in Morocco, led by Abd el-Krim. The image, dated circa 1925, shows French-Moroccan machine gunners manning their emplacement in the Atlas Mountains. With Spain's entry into the war and the major landing of troops at Al Hoceima, Abd el-Krim surrendered to the French and was taken into exile in 1926. The defenders are seen here preparing for battle, their machine guns at the ready, with ammunition boxes mounted nearby. The rugged terrain of the Atlas Mountains provides a challenging backdrop to the conflict, which lasted from 1921 to 1926 and marked a significant moment in the history of colonial Africa. The 1920s, also known as the 'Roaring Twenties,' saw numerous political and social upheavals around the world, and this photograph offers a glimpse into the military tactics and strategies employed during this period of African colonial history.
