EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored engraving, taken from Edouard Travies' drawings in Richards Oeuvres Completes de Buffon published by Pourrat Freres in Paris in 1839, showcases three iconic birds from the world of ornithology: the Puffin, the extinct Great Auk, and the Emperor Penguin. The Puffin, scientifically known as Fratercula arctica, is a distinctive seabird with a black back, white underparts, and colorful beak. They are still found in the North Atlantic Ocean and are known for their distinctive waddling walk. The Great Auk, Pinguinus impennis, was a flightless bird that once inhabited the North Atlantic shores. Sadly, this species was hunted to extinction in the late 19th century. The Great Auk is depicted in this engraving with its distinctive red eyes, black and white plumage, and large, rounded body. The Emperor Penguin, Aptenodytes forsteri, is the largest of all penguin species. They are found in the Antarctic and are easily recognizable by their black and white plumage, distinctive head markings, and large size. In this engraving, the Emperor Penguin is shown in its natural habitat, surrounded by ice and snow. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of these birds but also provides a glimpse into the history of ornithology. The work of Edouard Travies and the publication of Richards Oeuvres Completes de Buffon were significant contributions to the scientific understanding of the natural world, and this image remains an important historical document.
