Aptenodytes are a genus of aquatic birds in the family of penguins, and are the largest species of penguin, with males reaching heights up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) tall and weighing up to 40 kilograms (88 pounds). They have black heads and backs, white fronts, and yellowish-orange beaks. They live in cold climates near the Antarctic Circle and feed on fish, squid, krill, crustaceans, and other small marine animals. Aptenodytes typically mate for life and build nests out of stones or mud on land or ice shelves near their feeding grounds. The chicks hatch after around 35 days incubation period and remain with their parents until they reach maturity at around two years old and can an iconic species that symbolize strength in adversity due to their ability to survive harsh conditions in Antarctica's extreme environment.
