EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Princess Victoria Augusta of Hohenzollern, also known as Augusta Victoria or Augustine, on the eve of her marriage to King Manuel II of Portugal. Born on 19 August 1890 in Sigmaringen, Germany, as the only daughter of Prince William of Hohenzollern, Princess Augusta was destined for a life of royalty. Her marriage to Manuel II, which took place on 4 September 1913, was a significant event in European royal history. Manuel II was the last King of the House of Braganza and the Portuguese monarchy, which was overthrown in the Republican Revolution of 1910. Despite this political upheaval, Princess Augusta remained loyal to her husband, accompanying him into exile in England. The question of whether she would be granted the title of Her Royal Highness or Majesty as the wife of a deposed monarch was a matter of debate. Despite the challenges of exile and political uncertainty, Princess Augusta continued to uphold her royal duties and represent her husband and the Portuguese people. She was known for her grace, intelligence, and dedication to her family and causes, including the Red Cross and the Portuguese Red Cross. This portrait, taken in 1913, captures the young princess at the beginning of her journey as a royal consort, poised and confident in her role as the wife of a king. The photograph is a testament to her strength and resilience in the face of adversity, and serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of European royalty.
