EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of love and anticipation as Princess Astrid of Sweden, born Astrid Sofia Lovisa Thyra (1905-1935), and the future King Leopold III of Belgium, formally announced their engagement on September 21, 1926. The couple's radiant smiles and the tender gaze exchanged between them speak volumes of the deep connection they shared. Princess Astrid, a beloved member of the Swedish Royal Family, was the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf and Princess Margaretha of Connaught. Leopold, the third in line to the Belgian throne, was the eldest son of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth. Their engagement was met with great enthusiasm and excitement from both the Swedish and Belgian people, as it marked the beginning of a significant alliance between the two European monarchies. Tragically, Princess Astrid's life was cut short when she was killed in a car crash on August 29, 1935, at the age of just 30. Her untimely death left a profound impact on the Swedish and Belgian people, and her memory continues to be cherished to this day. This official engagement photograph, taken on that fateful September day in 1926, is a poignant reminder of the love story that unfolded between two young royals and the brief, yet meaningful, chapter they wrote in European royal history.
