EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts Luis Manuel Fernández de Portocarrero y León (1635-1709), a prominent Spanish prelate and politician who played a significant role in the final years of King Charles II's reign and during the absence of Philip V due to the War of the Spanish Succession. Born in Seville, Andalusia, Portocarrero held various important positions in the Spanish court, including the post of Grand Inquisitor and the viceroyalty of Sicily between 1661 and 1665. During the agony of King Charles II, Portocarrero served as the interim president of the Council of Castile and, later, as the regent of the kingdoms of Castile and León from 1696 to 1699. He was known for his strong leadership and ability to maintain order during a time of political instability and uncertainty. In this image, Portocarrero is depicted as a mature man with a goatee and a serious expression. He is shown wearing the robes of a prelate and holding a scepter in one hand and a document in the other. Surrounding him are various figures representing the different kingdoms and societies of Spain, symbolizing his role as a unifying figure during a time of division. The engraving was produced in Paris by the publishing house E-DE-FRANCE around the turn of the 18th century. Portocarrero's legacy as a key figure in Spanish history is evident in this striking and detailed engraving, which captures the essence of his important role in the political landscape of the time.
