EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the enigmatic figure of Anne Boleyn, also known as Anne Bullen, Queen of England in 1533. Created by the talented artist Edmund Thomas Parris, this portrait captures the essence of a woman who played a significant role in English history. Anne Boleyn was not only Henry VIII's second wife and queen consort but also the mother of Queen Elizabeth I. However, her life took a tragic turn when she was accused of adultery with her brother and four other men, along with conspiring against the king's life. This led to her imprisonment in the Tower of London and ultimately to her beheading. In this image, Anne stands regally dressed in an exquisite blue gown adorned with fur trimmings and an elaborate headdress. Her hand gesture suggests both confidence and grace as she gazes into the distance. The studio shot against a white background emphasizes her royal status while allowing viewers to focus solely on her presence. This print from The Connoisseur Vol. IV offers us a glimpse into sixteenth-century England and its intricate web of power struggles within aristocracy. It serves as a poignant reminder of Anne Boleyn's tragic fate at the hands of betrayal and political intrigue that shaped one era while paving the way for another - all captured beautifully by Edmund Thomas Parris' artistic vision.
