Nikolay Urvantsev, Soviet geologist

Nikolay Nikolayevich Urvantsev (1893-1985), Soviet geologist, speaking in public at his 80th birthday celebration. Urvantsev is best known for his exploration of northern Siberia and the Arctic, including: the Norilsk coal basin (1919 to 1922); the islands of Severnaya Zemlya (1931 to 1933); and the steamship Pravda oil exploration expedition (1933 to 1934). After imprisonment by Stalin, Urvantsev was rehabilitated in 1954 and became Chair of Arctic Geology at the national ocean geology institute. Photographed in Leningrad (St Petersburg), Russia, in 1973

XIR207831 Francisco de Miranda in the prison of La Carraca, Cadiz, Spain, early 19th century, 1896 (oil on canvas) (b/w photo) by Michelena, Arturo (1868-98); 196.6 x 245.5 cm; Caracas, Venezuela; ( Francisco de Miranda (1750-1816) Venezuelan revolutionary and idealist; participated in American Revolutionary war in 1781, then in the French Revolution, serving briefly as a general in the French Revolutionary army of Dumouriez in 1792; best known for his involvement in South America with the struggle of the Spanish colonies for independence he is considered the precursor of Simon Bolivar and in 1811 was responsible for the declaration of the independence of Venezuela from Spain; later reverses led to his surrender to the Spanish and imprisonment in Cadiz, where he died on July 14, 1816; the model who posed for this painting was the Venezuelan writer, Eduardo Blanco;
