EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite chromolithograph print, created by Gillot from an illustration by Edouard Garnier in 1891, showcases the Porcelain Service for the Empress of Russia from 1778. The service, produced at the renowned Manufactory of Sevres in Paris, is a stunning example of the soft paste porcelain artistry of the time. The illustration features several pieces from the service, including a cup, plate, sugarbowl, and teapot, all adorned with intricate gold gilt decorations and delicate floral motifs. The cup and plate are depicted with a single rose and a spray of roses, respectively, while the sugarbowl and teapot are adorned with a barre and taillandier design, respectively. The Empress of Russia referred to in the title is most likely Catherine II, who ruled from 1762 to 1796. Porcelain services were highly prized possessions of the European aristocracy, and this one, with its elegant design and superior craftsmanship, would have been a fitting addition to Catherine's lavish court. The soft paste porcelain of Sevres was renowned for its translucent quality and ability to replicate the delicate colors and textures of natural flowers. The Manufactory of Sevres was founded in 1756 and quickly gained a reputation for producing some of the finest porcelain in Europe. This service for the Empress of Russia is a testament to the skill and artistry of the Manufactory's artisans and the enduring appeal of porcelain as a symbol of wealth and status in the 18th century.
