EDITORS COMMENTS
"Step right up and prepare to be astonished by the magical wonders of Maskelyne & Cooke's The Novelty of the Age, performed at the esteemed Berkley Castle in Blackpool during January 1870. This extraordinary variety show featured the renowned Royal Illusionists, Maskelyne and Cooke, in a dazzling array of roles. Delighting the most fastidious audiences while puzzling the scientific, these master magicians showcased a breathtaking repertoire of illusions. The bill includes the remarkable decapitation trick, where the illusion of beheading leaves onlookers speechless. Witness the awe-inspiring levitation act, as performers seem to defy gravity and float effortlessly above the stage. The musical numbers are not to be missed, as the magicians showcase their dexterity and balancing skills, accompanied by lively Irish tunes. The show's comedic elements are sure to bring a smile to your face, with a transformation farce featuring a mischievous Gorilla that is not to be missed. Maskelyne and Cooke's acts are a true testament to the art of illusion, combining skill, humor, and mystery. As patrons took their seats, they eagerly anticipated the next act, be it the Mellon Illusions or the conjurors' mind-bending tricks. The stage was set for an unforgettable evening of entertainment, where the impossible became possible and the ordinary became extraordinary. This Playbill, featuring the charming charisma of Charles Maskelyne and the enigmatic presence of Cooke, is a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of magic and variety shows during the late 19th century. A true must-have for any collector of historical ephemera or magic memorabilia." Image Reference: HPF/5A/31 from Mary Evans Prints Online. (Do not use for commercial purposes)
