This exquisite 14th-century Gothic miniature painting depicts King Philip IV the Fair of France (1268-1314), who ruled as King of France and Navarre from 1285 until his death in 1314. Surrounded by his family, Philip is shown seated on his throne, dressed in the regal robes of the time. To his right, his daughter Isabelle, who would later become Queen of England, tenderly holds the hand of her father. The future kings Louis X and Charles IV, his sons, sit on either side of him, displaying the promise of the royal lineage. Philip's brother, Charles, Count of Valois, stands behind him, offering his support.
