EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures Peregrine Bertie, Lord Willoughby of Eresby (1555-1601), a renowned English soldier who made his mark in Europe during the late 16th century. The photograph, an authentic autograph, bears the signature of Lord Willoughby, adding an intriguing historical touch. Bertie's military career began in earnest when he joined the army of Henri IV of France to aid in the latter's campaign against the Catholic League in the late 1590s. His military prowess and loyalty were soon recognized, and he was appointed as a colonel in the French army. The following decade saw Lord Willoughby's involvement in various military engagements across Europe, most notably in the Netherlands, where he fought against Spanish forces under Archduke Albert and Archduchess Isabella. His bravery and leadership were instrumental in several key victories, earning him the respect of his comrades and the admiration of his enemies. Despite his successes on the battlefield, Lord Willoughby's allegiance to the French king remained a source of controversy in England. His actions were seen as a betrayal to the English crown, and he was eventually forced to return home in 1601. Tragically, he was killed in a skirmish with Scottish rebels just a few months later. This photograph, with its authentic autograph, offers a rare glimpse into the life of this fascinating historical figure. Lord Willoughby's story is a testament to the complexities of political alliances and the enduring allure of the military life in the late Renaissance period.
