EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the annals of history, we find the moment of transformation for Lydia of Thyatira, a prosperous dealer of dyestuffs in the ancient city now known as Akhisar, Turkey. The year is believed to be around 49-51 AD, and the figure to her right is none other than the Apostle Paul, who would go on to become one of the most influential figures in the spread of Christianity. Lydia's successful business endeavors had made her a prominent figure in Thyatira's bustling commercial scene. Yet, it was her openness to new ideas and her receptive spirit that made her an ideal candidate for Paul's message of faith and salvation. According to the New Testament of the Bible (Acts 16:11-15), Paul and his companions, Silas and Timothy, arrived in Thyatira and were led by the Spirit to seek lodging in Lydia's house. It was there that Paul shared the Gospel with her and her household, and Lydia and her entire family were baptized, becoming the first converts in that city. This photograph, a testament to the rich history of Thyatira and the enduring impact of Paul's missionary journeys, transports us back to a time when the ancient city was a thriving center of commerce and culture. The image invites us to reflect on the power of openness and the transformative effect that new ideas can have on individuals and communities. As we gaze upon this historical moment, we are reminded of the enduring significance of the past and the continuous unfolding of human history. This photograph, by Rights Managed from Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the past and invites us to contemplate the profound impact that one person's journey of faith can have on the world.
