Occupying German position in the Somme area 1917

During the spring of 1917 the German forces on the Western Front vountarily retired from the positions in the Somme at Serre, which they had defended with such stubborness in 1916, to the famous Hindenburg line, an intricate system of heavily fortified trenches between the Vimy Ridge on the north and the Chemin des James ridge in the south. In the back ground of the photograph there is a sign saying " Old Hun line".

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment in 1917 when Allied forces occupied the former German positions in the Somme region at Serre, following the German retreat to the heavily fortified Hindenburg Line. The intricate network of trenches, visible in the background of the image, had been defended with great tenacity by the German forces during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The sign in the distance, marked "Old Hun line," bears testament to the historical significance of the site. The soldiers in the photograph, huddled together and gazing into the distance, convey a sense of both triumph and apprehension as they survey their hard-won gains. The image offers a poignant reminder of the brutal and relentless nature of trench warfare during World War I, as forces on both sides fought for every inch of ground in the muddy, bloody fields of the Western Front. This photograph, taken in 1917, is a powerful visual representation of the ebb and flow of the conflict, and a testament to the courage and determination of the soldiers who fought in this historic campaign.
