EDITORS COMMENTS
17 June 1794: The Capture of Ypres, Belgium, by the French Revolutionary Army This evocative print depicts the pivotal moment in the French Revolutionary Wars when the city of Ypres, in modern-day Belgium, fell to the French Revolutionary Army on 17 June 1794. The image captures the intensity and chaos of the battlefield, with French soldiers hoisting their tricolor flag atop the city walls, signifying their victory over the Austrian forces. The French Revolutionary Wars, which lasted from 1792 to 1802, were a series of conflicts sparked by the French Revolution and its expansionist policies. The Battle of Ypres was a significant engagement in the War of the First Coalition, a multi-national alliance formed against revolutionary France. The Austrian forces, led by the Archduke Albrecht, had occupied Ypres since 1789, but they were no match for the French army under the command of General Charles François Dumouriez. The siege of Ypres began on 29 May 1794, and the city fell after a fierce 16-day battle. The French victory at Ypres was a turning point in the war, as it allowed the French to establish a stronghold in the Spanish Netherlands and paved the way for further conquests. The fall of Ypres also marked the beginning of the end for the Austrian presence in the region, which would eventually lead to the establishment of the Belgian state. This print is a testament to the bravery and determination of the French soldiers who fought to expand the revolutionary cause beyond the borders of France. It also serves as a reminder of the far-reaching impact of the French Revolution and its wars on European history.
