This evocative photograph captures the raw and unforgiving reality of coal mining in 1860s France. Taken in the year 1867, this image offers a rare glimpse into the daily life and working conditions of the coal miners who labored deep beneath the earth's surface. The dimly lit interior of the mine reveals a maze of narrow tunnels, where miners toil in near darkness, armed only with their picks and shovels.
