EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by B. Andrei, from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, depicts a breathtaking view of the ancient city of Babylon. The image showcases the grandeur and majesty of the once powerful Babylonian Empire, with its iconic landmarks, the Tower of Babel and the Hanging Gardens, proudly standing in the foreground. The Tower of Babel, a seven-story ziggurat, is believed to have been the center of the Babylonian religious system, while the Hanging Gardens, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, were a marvel of ancient engineering and horticulture. The procession of people and animals, led by a triumphant King Cyrus of Persia, entering the city through the impressive archway, adds to the scene's historical significance. The invasion and subsequent triumph of Cyrus the Great over the Babylonian Empire in 540 BC marked the end of the Neo-Babylonian Empire and the beginning of the Achaemenid Empire. The solemn pomp and grandeur of the entrance, as depicted in this illustration by Angelo Monticelli, symbolizes the transfer of power and the beginning of a new era in world history. This engraving is not only a beautiful work of art but also a historical document that transports us back in time, allowing us to witness the grandeur and splendor of the ancient city of Babylon and the significant events that shaped its history.
