EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts three distinctive sparrow species: the Vesper Sparrow (1), the Grasshopper Sparrow (2), and the Field Sparrow (3). The image is based on an ornithological illustration by the renowned naturalist John James Audubon, as featured in Benjamin Harry Warren's Report on the Birds of Pennsylvania, published in Harrisburg in 1890. The Vesper Sparrow, also known as the Savannah Sparrow, is represented by the bird on the far left. This species, with its dark-eyed, brown-streaked plumage, is a common resident in open grasslands and meadows across North America. The Grasshopper Sparrow (2), in the center, is a small, cryptically colored bird that blends seamlessly into its grassy habitat. Its distinctive upward-curved bill and brown, streaked back contrast with its bright yellow underparts. The Field Sparrow (3), on the right, is a familiar sight in open fields and meadows throughout the eastern United States. Its brown and gray plumage, with a distinctly buffy belly and rufous flanks, make it easily identifiable. This stunning 19th-century lithograph, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, offers a glimpse into the rich natural history of North America and the meticulous work of one of its greatest naturalists.
