George H. Chirgwin know as 'the White-Eyed Kaffir'

George H. Chirgwin (14 December 1854 17 November 1922) was a popular British music hall star billed as "the White-Eyed Kaffir", a black face minstrel act. He adopted the white diamond on his blacked up face as a trade mark after it came about by accident. Chirgwin appeared in the first Royal Variety Command Performance in 1912. This striking image is one by Alick P.F. Ritchie (1868-1938) in a series of music hall personalities. Date: 1800s, 1900s?

The Days of Cromwell by Charles Rogers and Carter Livesey. First produced at the Borough Theatre, Stratford, on 19th October 1896 The caption reads Toby, I can hear fightin. Comic relief was an essential, if to modern minds tedious, part of traditional melodramas like this one. Postmarked 18/12/1905. Date: 1905

Suffragette Give Me a Vote Ceramic

A wild-eyed suffragette dressed in the colours of the W.S.P.U - purple, white and green, waves a flag which reads, 'I Want a Vote'. The inscription on the base reads, 'Give me a Vote and See What I'll Do!'. Based on a design by John Hassall who was commisioned by the National League for Opposing Women's Suffrage in 1912 to produce posters and postcards for propaganda purposes. This ceramic figure was made by the enterprising firm of Schafer & Vater in Germany. Height 13cm. Date: circa 1912
