EDITORS COMMENTS
King Edward VII (1841-1910), the future monarch of the United Kingdom, is seen enjoying a leisurely day at the popular spa town of Bad Homburg in Germany during the 1880s. Surrounded by his companions, the King is pictured centre, wearing a fashionable Homburg hat, a nod to the town's famous hats. To his left, Sir Christopher Sykes, a British diplomat, and Captain Fitzgeorge, a member of the British Royal Navy. To the King's right, we find the Duke of Cambridge (1844-1904), the fifth son of Queen Victoria, and a military officer. The Prince of Wales, Edward VII, visited Bad Homburg most years from the 1870s, seeking relief from various ailments and the opportunity to socialize with European royalty and high society. Joining the Prince are Colonel Fitzgeorge (1843-1911), a British Army officer, and Sir Reuben Sassoon (1836-1912), a wealthy British businessman and philanthropist. Completing the group is General Stephenson (1829-1913), a British Army officer and Governor of Gibraltar from 1883 to 1887. The men are dressed in fashionable attire for the occasion, reflecting the elegance and sophistication of the spa town. This photograph captures a moment of relaxation and camaraderie among the Prince and his companions during their holiday in Bad Homburg. The image offers a glimpse into the opulent and leisurely lifestyle of the European royalty and high society of the late 19th century.
