EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the youthful elegance and allure of Margaret Whigham, later known as the Duchess of Argyll, at the height of her debutante season in 1932. At the time, the press was abuzz with excitement over her engagement to the Earl of Warwick, making headlines as the most popular and pretty deb of the year. The society wedding was set to be the event of the season, but just a few weeks before the ceremony, Margaret shockingly called off the engagement. Undeterred, Margaret went on to marry Charles Sweeny in a lavish ceremony in 1933, which became the society wedding of the year. However, her marital bliss was short-lived as she later became the Duchess of Argyll in 1938, marrying the Duke of Argyll. The marriage ended in scandal in 1963, with the Duke divorcing her in a case that sent shockwaves through the country. Despite the ups and downs of her personal life, Margaret's beauty and charisma continued to captivate the public, making this portrait a fascinating glimpse into the glamour and intrigue of the 1930s debutante scene.
