EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning and intricately detailed print is a beautiful example of early entomological illustration, featuring the Oak Achalles Weevil, Acalles roboris, and its host plant, Lobelia urens, or Acrid Lobelia. The illustration is taken from John Curtis's seminal work, "British Entomology," published between 1824 and 1839. The Coleoptera section of this comprehensive work was overseen by the renowned entomologist, Thomas Say, and the illustrations were produced by the skilled hand of Ledipotera, the pseudonym for the talented artist and engraver, William Sharp Macleay. The Oak Achalles Weevil is a small, brown weevil, measuring just a few millimeters in length. It is a native of Europe and is commonly found on oak trees, particularly those in woodland habitats. The adult weevils feed on the leaves of their host plants, while the larvae bore into the wood, creating galleries that can weaken and even kill the tree if numbers are high. The Acrid Lobelia, also known as the Trailing Lobelia, is a small, herbaceous plant that is native to Africa and is now widely cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is a popular choice for gardens due to its attractive, trailing habit and vibrant, blue-violet flowers. The plant is a member of the Campanulaceae family and is often used in traditional medicine for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. This exquisite print provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Oak Achalles Weevil and the Acrid Lobelia, capturing their intricate details and showcasing the exceptional skill of the illustrator and engraver. The illustration is a testament to the importance of early natural history records and the role they play in our understanding of the natural world.
