EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 33 of the Modern Athenians series captures a historic moment on the streets of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1847. The image features two prominent lawyers, Mr. Patrick Shaw (1796-1872) and Hercules Robertson, Lord Benholme (1796-1874), engaged in a lively conversation as they walk along the city's cobblestone streets. Mr. Shaw, a monoped, or one-legged man, is dressed in a fashionable Victorian outfit, complete with a top hat and an umbrella, which he holds poised over his head. His companion, Lord Benholme, Sheriff of Renfrewshire, is also dressed in the antiquated attire of the time, wearing a long, flowing coat and a top hat. Despite their distinguished positions and formal attire, the two men appear relaxed and engaged in their conversation, oblivious to the bustling activity around them. The plate captures the essence of Edinburgh's vibrant urban life in the mid-19th century, with horse-drawn carriages, pedestrians, and vendors filling the streets. The Modern Athenians series, produced by the Scottish publisher Robert Chambers, was a groundbreaking collection of photographic portraits and scenes of Scottish life. This particular plate, number 33, offers a unique glimpse into the lives of two prominent Edinburgh lawyers, showcasing the city's rich history and the everyday experiences of its inhabitants.
