EDITORS COMMENTS
Mary, Queen of Scots, also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, is depicted in this 16th-century portrait. The image, believed to have been created during the 1580s, showcases Mary in regal attire, wearing a richly embroidered gown adorned with pearls and a velvet mantle lined with ermine fur. Her hair is styled in elaborate curls, framing her delicate features and expressive eyes. Mary, born in December 1542, was the only legitimate child of King James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. At the age of six days, she became Queen of Scotland upon her father's death. This portrait captures Mary at the height of her power and beauty, a time when she was actively seeking to regain the Scottish throne after being driven into exile in France following a series of political upheavals. Mary's reign as Queen of Scots was marked by her marriage to the Dauphin of France and her subsequent marriage to Henry, Lord Darnley, which resulted in the birth of her son, James VI of Scotland. However, her rule was fraught with turmoil, including the mysterious death of Darnley and her subsequent marriage to James Hepburn, the Earl of Bothwell, who was widely suspected of involvement in Darnley's demise. Mary's tragic story came to an end in 1587 when she was imprisoned in England on charges of plotting against Queen Elizabeth I. She was eventually found guilty of treason and beheaded on February 8, 1587. This hauntingly beautiful portrait serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous life of one of Scotland's most legendary monarchs.
