EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolour painting, created by Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1771, depicts Marsdenia mollissima, also known as the Soft Marsdenia or Brazilian Cynanchum. The painting, annotated as Cynanchum crassifolium, is an accurate representation of this beautiful and intricate flowering plant. Marsdenia mollissima is a member of the Apocynaceae family, specifically the Asclepiadoideae subfamily, and is native to South America. It is an angiosperm, a type of flowering plant that produces seeds enclosed in an ovary. As an eudicot, it belongs to the Magnoliophyta division, which includes all flowering plants that have two embryonic seed leaves (cotyledons). The Gentianales order, to which Marsdenia mollissima belongs, is characterized by its distinctive flower structure, which includes a five-lobed calyx and a corolla with five petals. The Asterid clade, to which this plant also belongs, is a large group of flowering plants that includes a wide range of diverse species. This painting is a testament to the remarkable botanical discoveries made during Captain Cook's voyage, which saw him and his crew travel through uncharted waters and explore new lands. Sydney Parkinson, an accomplished artist and naturalist, accompanied Cook on his journey and documented the diverse flora and fauna of the Pacific region. His meticulous illustrations, like this one of Marsdenia mollissima, remain an invaluable resource for botanical research and continue to captivate viewers with their beauty and scientific accuracy.
