Maria Anne Baillie Ashley, nee, was a much-adored and frequently painted lady of the early Victorian era. In this portrait, taken circa 1842, Maria Anne is depicted as the elegant and refined wife of the Honorable Anthony William Ashley. The painting beautifully captures her youthful beauty and poised demeanor, with her piercing gaze and delicate features. Maria Anne's maiden name was Willoughby Williams Baillie, and she was born into a prominent Scottish family. She married Anthony Ashley, a member of the British Parliament, in 1836. The couple's marriage was a socially significant one, as Anthony was the brother of the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, a prominent political figure and philanthropist. Anthony and Maria Anne had three children together: Anthony, William, and Mary. The family resided in various estates in England and Scotland, including the famous St. Giles House in Wimborne Minster, Dorset. Maria Anne's striking appearance and graceful demeanor made her a favorite subject for portrait painters of the time.
