In this portrait, taken circa 1842, Maria Anne is depicted as the elegant and refined wife of the Honorable Anthony William Ashley. Maria Anne's maiden name was Willoughby Williams Baillie, and she was born into a prominent Scottish family. She married Anthony Ashley, a member of the British Parliament, in 1836. Anthony and Maria Anne had three children together: Anthony, William, and Mary.
