Maarten van Heemskerck: A Dutch Master of the Sixteenth Century Maarten van Heemskerck, born in the Netherlands around 1498, was a prominent Dutch painter of the sixteenth century. Known as Maarten Jacobszoon Heemskerck van Veen, he is celebrated for his portraits and religious works, as well as his designs for engravers. This image, believed to date from the 1560s, showcases the artist in his later years, with a wise and introspective expression. Heemskerck's impact on Dutch art was significant, as he was one of the first artists to introduce the Italian Mannerist style to the Netherlands. His works were characterized by their grandeur and intricacy, with an emphasis on the use of chiaroscuro and complex compositions. Heemskerck's most famous series, the 'Wonders of the World,' showcased his mastery of the Mannerist style and his ability to capture the imagination of his audience.
