EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the martyrdom of Ramon Llull, a Majorcan writer and philosopher born in the 13th or 14th century. Llull is best known for his contributions to the Catalan language and literature, as well as his promotion of the spread of Christianity in the Mediterranean world. In the image, Llull is shown being lapidated, or stoned to death, in Tunisia during his missionary journey to North Africa. The engraving was printed in Valencia in 1515 by D. of Gumiel, and is now held in the University Library of Barcelona. During his lifetime, Llull was a prolific writer, producing works on various subjects including logic, theology, and philosophy. He is also credited with inventing the "Art of the Four Elements," a system of organizing knowledge based on the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. Llull's writings were influential in the development of Catalan literature and philosophy, and he is considered a pioneer of the European Renaissance. Despite his intellectual pursuits, Llull's missionary work in North Africa ultimately led to his martyrdom. He was arrested and brought before the Islamic ruler of Tunisia, who ordered him to renounce his Christian faith. When Llull refused, he was sentenced to death and stoned to death in the public square. The image of Llull's martyrdom reflects the complex religious and cultural landscape of the Mediterranean world during the Middle Ages. It shows the encounter between Christianity and Islam, as well as the role of the Catholic Church and the Crown of Aragon in promoting the spread of the faith. The engraving also highlights the bravery and devotion of Llull and other missionaries who risked their lives to bring the message of Christianity to the people of North Africa.
