EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting photograph captures Lady Beauchamp, formerly Lady Lettice Grosvenor (1887-1960), and her three eldest daughters, Lettice (b. 1906), Sybil (b. 1907), and Mary (b. 1910), in an Edwardian drawing room, circa 1910. The family, collectively known as the Beauchamp Belles, were prominent figures in the upper echelons of British society during the 1930s. Lady Beauchamp, a member of the aristocratic Lygon family, was renowned for her beauty, wit, and charm. Her daughters, with their striking features and elegant demeanor, were the epitome of high society elegance. The youngest sister, Dorothy, is not present in this portrait. The Lygon sisters were close friends with Evelyn Waugh, the renowned English author, who was deeply influenced by their charisma and the unique atmosphere of their family home, Madresfield Court. Waugh's novel, Brideshead Revisited, is believed to be inspired by the sisters and their idyllic, yet melancholic, existence within the confines of the English aristocracy. This evocative portrait, with its soft lighting and formal attire, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a bygone era of Edwardian elegance and refinement. The sisters' timeless beauty and the intriguing history that surrounds them continue to captivate and inspire, making this photograph a valuable piece of historical and social significance.
