EDITORS COMMENTS
In this engraving from the 19th century, we witness the grand arrival of King Alfonso XII of Spain and his queen consort, Maria Christina of Austria, at the Royal Palace of El Pardo. The image, created by the skilled hand of Spanish engraver Rico, was published in the renowned Spanish publication La Ilustracion Espanola y Americana in 1879. King Alfonso XII, born in 1857, ascended to the Spanish throne at the tender age of 14 following the death of his mother, Queen Isabella II. Maria Christina, born in 1858, was the eldest daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria and Empress Elisabeth of Bavaria. The two were married in 1879, and Maria Christina became queen consort of Spain. The couple's arrival at the Royal Palace of El Pardo, located just north of Madrid, is depicted in all its splendor. The king, dressed in a formal military uniform, stands confidently atop his horse, while Maria Christina, elegantly attired in a long, flowing gown, is escorted by her ladies-in-waiting. The royal procession makes its way through the picturesque Spanish countryside, with the palace's imposing gates and towering walls serving as a backdrop. The vibrant colors of the engraving bring the scene to life, transporting us back to the opulent 19th century. The intricate details of the royal couple's clothing, the horses' regal trappings, and the lush greenery of the landscape are all rendered with remarkable precision and artistry. This image offers a glimpse into the grandeur and majesty of the Spanish monarchy during a time of great change and transformation.
