EDITORS COMMENTS
Jacques Coeur, also known as Jacques Cœur or Jacques de Cœur, was a prominent French merchant and manufacturer during the late Middle Aages. Born around 1395, Coeur rose to great wealth and influence through his trading and manufacturing ventures. He became a trusted counsellor to King Charles VII during a time of political instability and economic hardship in France. Despite his contributions to the kingdom, Coeur was falsely accused of treason and other crimes in 1456. The charges were likely politically motivated, as Coeur had been a vocal critic of certain powerful figures at the royal court. He was quickly condemned and exiled from France. Despite the injustice of his condemnation, Coeur continued to maintain a correspondence with the king and even sent him gifts. He spent the remainder of his days in exile in various European cities, including Italy and the Holy Land. This image of Jacques Coeur, known as the "Mono Coeur" or "Single Heart," depicts him in the later stages of his life. The monogram "JC" on his chest is a common symbol associated with him. Coeur's story is a reminder of the risks and uncertainties of medieval political life, as well as the enduring human capacity for resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Jacques Coeur's legacy extends beyond his personal story, as he is also remembered for his role in the development of the French textile industry and his patronage of the arts. This photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable figure from French history.
