EDITORS COMMENTS
Grand Princess Tatiana Nikolaievna of Russia, eldest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Tsaritsa Alexandra Feodorovna, is depicted in this striking photograph as Commander-in-Chief of the 8th Vosnesensky Lancers, outside the grand Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo, around 1913. Tatiana's dark green uniform, with its distinctive bright yellow facings, collar, and piping, accentuates her impossibly slim waist and the elegance of her ankle-length skirt. The uniform, which has survived to this day, was a symbol of her dedication to her military role and her loyalty to her father, who was also the Emperor of Russia. The photograph captures Tatiana in her early twenties, standing confidently on horseback, with a determined expression on her face. Her dark hair is pulled back into a neat chignon, and she wears a simple white blouse and black riding boots beneath her uniform. In the background, the grandeur of the Alexander Palace can be seen, with its ornate columns and intricate details. Tatiana's connection to the Russian royal family is further emphasized by her lineage. She was the granddaughter of Princess Alice of Hesse and by Rhine, who was known for her humanitarian work and her devotion to her family. Tatiana's mother, Tsaritsa Alexandra, was a Danish princess, and her father, Tsar Nicholas II, was the last Emperor of Russia, who was tragically executed with his family in 1918 during the Russian Revolution. This photograph is a rare glimpse into the life of Grand Princess Tatiana, who played an important role in the Russian military and the imperial court before the tragic events of the early 20th century. The surviving uniform is a testament to her legacy and her commitment to her country and her family.
