EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bravery and determination of Scottish soldiers during the critical moments of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The image shows a group of Scots in their iconic kilts, huddled together in the thick of the fight, holding a wrecked trench and dug-out. The battle, which took place between July 1st and November 18th, 1916, was one of the largest and deadliest engagements of World War I, with over one million casualties. The soldiers in this photograph are likely members of the 15th (Scottish) Division, who played a significant role in the Battle of the Somme. They are seen here in the midst of the chaos, their faces etched with concentration and resolve as they defend their position against the enemy. The trench behind them is a testament to the brutal and relentless nature of trench warfare, with its muddy, cratered landscape and twisted metal remnants of destroyed dug-outs. Despite the horrific conditions and the immense loss of life, the soldiers in this photograph embody the spirit of gallantry and courage that defined the Tommy soldier of the First World War. Their unwavering commitment to their comrades and their country in the face of overwhelming adversity continues to inspire us today.
