EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the stern yet resolute visage of Clement Armand Fallières, a prominent French statesman who served as the President of France from 1906 to 1913. Born on February 18, 1841, in the town of Lectoure, Fallières began his political career as a deputy in the National Assembly in 1881. He rose through the ranks of the Republican Party, becoming Prime Minister in 1890 and then President in 1906. During his presidency, Fallières faced numerous challenges, including the Moroccan Crisis of 1905-1906, which tested France's relations with Germany and other European powers. He also oversaw the construction of the Panama Canal, which was a significant achievement for France at the time. However, Fallières' presidency was cut short by the election of Raymond Poincaré in 1913. After leaving office, Fallières continued to serve in various political capacities, including as a senator and as the High Commissioner of Algeria. He also played a role in the political events leading up to World War I. This photograph, taken in 1913, captures Fallières in the prime of his political career, with the weight of the world on his shoulders. His intense gaze and furrowed brow suggest a man deeply committed to his country and its people, a man who was not afraid to make tough decisions in the face of adversity. The photograph is a testament to a bygone era of French political history, a time when men like Fallières shaped the course of their nation's destiny." Mary Evans Picture Library holds an extensive collection of historical photographs, including this image of Clement Armand Fallières. The Library's online platform offers a wealth of resources for researchers, educators, and anyone interested in exploring the rich tapestry of history.
