Experiment with jets to clear away snow in Wales, 1947

Jet engines or gas turbines, acting like blow lamps, eat their way through the snow as a truck advances down the railway line in the hills of South Wales. This was the last in a series of tests which proved the effectiveness of jets in clearing snow drifts to allow trains carrying coal from Wales to reach other parts of the country, during one of the coldest winters known in Britain. Date: 1947

EDITORS COMMENTS
This incredible print captures a groundbreaking experiment in Wales during the harsh winter of 1947. As snow blanketed the hills of South Wales, jet engines or gas turbines were used to clear away massive drifts blocking railway tracks. Acting like blow lamps, these powerful machines ate their way through the snow as a truck advanced down the line. The tests proved successful in demonstrating the effectiveness of jets in clearing snow drifts, allowing trains carrying vital coal from Wales to reach other parts of the country. This was crucial during one of Britain's coldest winters on record. The image showcases a historical moment where technology and innovation came together to combat extreme weather conditions. The scene is both awe-inspiring and practical, highlighting the ingenuity required to keep essential transport routes open during freezing temperatures. As we look back at this snapshot from 1947, we are reminded of the resilience and determination shown by those who worked tirelessly to ensure that life could continue even in the most challenging circumstances. It serves as a testament to human adaptability and resourcefulness in overcoming nature's obstacles.
