EDITORS COMMENTS
In the tranquil waters of the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Brest, France, a tragic maritime collision occurred on May 19, 1922. The P&O liner, Egypt, en route to India, collided with the French freighter Seine about 40km off the French coast. The impact was severe, resulting in the loss of 87 lives, making it a significant maritime disaster of the era. The Egypt, a proud transport vessel of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, was carrying a large number of passengers and crew members. The French freighter, Seine, was laden with cargo, destined for various ports in Europe. The cause of the collision remains unclear, but what followed was a chaotic scene. The lascar crew members of the Seine, known for their rough and ungentlemanly behavior, reportedly took advantage of the situation to loot and plunder from the stricken Egypt. The passengers and crew of the P&O liner were left in a state of shock and despair, as they watched their ship slowly sink into the depths of the ocean. The collision was a grim reminder of the dangers of the sea and the importance of seamanship and discipline. The incident received widespread coverage in the press, and the maritime community was left mourning the loss of lives and the unsavory behavior of some of its members. This photograph captures the aftermath of the collision, with the Egypt sinking into the ocean, and the Seine in the background, seemingly untouched by the disaster. It serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of maritime accidents and the need for better safety measures and adherence to ethical conduct at sea.
