The P&O liner, Egypt, en route to India, collided with the French freighter Seine about 40km off the French coast. The impact was severe, resulting in the loss of 87 lives, making it a significant maritime disaster of the era. The Egypt, a proud transport vessel of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, was carrying a large number of passengers and crew members.
