EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the momentous occasion of the wedding day of His Majesty King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, on March 10, 1863. The image, taken in 1863, shows the young prince in full length regalia, standing proudly before his bride, Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Born on November 9, 1841, Edward was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His father's untimely death in 1861 left Edward as the heir to the British throne. The wedding ceremony took place at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace, London. The bride, Princess Alexandra, wore a beautiful gown of ivory satin, trimmed with Brussels lace and orange blossoms. The couple's union was a significant event in British history, as it marked the end of the Victorian era and the beginning of the Edwardian period. Edward and Alexandra's marriage was a love match, and they were deeply devoted to each other. Their union produced six children, including the future King George V and Queen Mary. Edward's reign, which began in 1901 upon his mother's death, was marked by social and political changes, including the granting of Home Rule to Ireland and the passage of the Parliament Act 1911, which limited the power of the House of Lords. This photograph is a testament to the history and tradition of the British monarchy, providing a glimpse into the past and a reminder of the significant role that the monarchy has played in shaping the course of British history. The image's full length composition offers a detailed view of the prince's attire, from his ermine-trimmed robe and velvet breeches to his polished shoes and decorative sword. The photograph is a valuable historical document, preserving the memory of a pivotal moment in the life of a beloved monarch.
