A Derby night

Illustration by S. Begg showing a long queue of men lining up to enlist. Lord Derby, Director General of Recruiting in 1916 introduced the Derby scheme which encouraged men from the same offices or factories to join up together to form pals battalions. The scheme also divided men up into single and married and offered a war pension to those with dependents. As the prospect of conscription loomed, and with December 15th 1915 as the deadline for volunteering or attesting, recruitment offices found it difficult to cope with the crowds

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful illustration by S. Begg captures the atmosphere of a Derby night in 1916, as men line up in a long queue to enlist in the army. Lord Derby, Director General of Recruiting at the time, introduced the innovative Derby scheme which encouraged men from the same workplaces to join up together and form pals battalions. This scheme also divided men into categories based on their marital status and offered a war pension to those with dependents. As December 15th, 1915 approached as the deadline for volunteering or attesting, recruitment offices were overwhelmed with crowds of eager men looking to do their part for their country. The looming prospect of conscription added an extra sense of urgency to this already difficult situation. This historical illustration serves as an important reminder of the sacrifices made by so many during World War I. It highlights not only the bravery and patriotism of these men but also the challenges they faced in answering their nation's call to arms. The image is a poignant snapshot of a pivotal moment in history when ordinary individuals came together to make an extraordinary impact on the world stage.
