EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the poignant moment from Charles Dickens' classic novel "David Copperfield" when Mr. Peggotty, played by the renowned actor W.H. Wills, embarks on a desperate search for the lost little girl, Emily, in the rough and unfamiliar terrain of Yarmouth, England in 1849. Mr. Peggotty, a kind and loving guardian to David Copperfield, is deeply concerned for the safety of the young girl who has been taken by the nefarious Uriah Heep. In the photograph, Mr. Peggotty, with his distinctive white beard and furrowed brow, points intently in the direction he believes Emily may have been taken, his expression a mixture of determination and fear. David, not pictured here, looks on with a sense of foreboding, knowing the danger that lies ahead. The image is reminiscent of the famous scene in the novel where Mr. Peggotty declares, "Em'ly, my child! I'll find 'er! I'll find 'er!" This photograph, published in the late 19th century, is a testament to the enduring power of Dickens' storytelling and the enduring image of Mr. Peggotty as a loving and protective guardian. The image is also a reminder of the historical context of the novel, set in the mid-19th century, a time of great social and economic change in England. The books and papers scattered on the ground add to the sense of history and the passage of time. This photograph, from the extensive collection of historical images at Mary Evans Picture Library, is a valuable resource for scholars, educators, and anyone interested in the history of literature and the Victorian era.
