EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Commander Peter Strasser, the charismatic and daring leader of the German Imperial Navy's Zeppelin corps during World War I. Born in 1876, Strasser rose through the ranks to become the chief commander of the Zeppelin force, overseeing bombing campaigns against Great Britain from 1915 to 1917. The image, taken circa 1916, shows Strasser in his element, standing confidently before the massive hull of a Zeppelin airship. With a determined gaze and clenched fist, he embodies the spirit of the German military's innovative and audacious use of air power during the war. Despite the risks, Strasser continued to lead his crews on dangerous raids, and on the night of September 7, 1918, he was killed during the last major Zeppelin raid over Great Britain. His death was a significant loss for the German military, and the end of the Zeppelin offensive marked a turning point in the war. This haunting photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the courage and determination of Commander Peter Strasser and the crews who served under him, and the pivotal role that air power played in the conflict.
