EDITORS COMMENTS
Catherine II, also known as Catherine the Great, was the Empress of Russia from 1762 until her death in 1796. Born in Germany as Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst, she rose to power through her marriage to Peter III of Russia in 1745. However, her husband's reign was short-lived, as he was overthrown just a few months after their wedding. Seizing the opportunity, Catherine took control of the government and began a reign marked by significant reforms and territorial expansion. This stunning portrait captures Catherine II in the prime of her reign, promenading through her gardens at Tsarskoye Selo, near St. Petersburg. Dressed in a flowing robe of bright red, the color of power and authority, she exudes confidence and grace. The Empress is accompanied by her trusted advisor, Grigory Orlov, who stands behind her, holding an umbrella to shield her from the sun. The serene expression on Catherine's face and the peaceful scene around her convey a sense of tranquility and contentment. Catherine II's reign was a period of great cultural and intellectual growth in Russia. She patronized the arts, established the Moscow University, and implemented a series of reforms aimed at modernizing the Russian state. Her rule also saw the expansion of Russian territory, including the annexation of Crimea and the acquisition of Poland. Catherine II's legacy as a strong and visionary leader continues to be celebrated in Russian history.
